Hey! I’m Anya K. Doorga, Esq. but you can call me AKD.
I am an attorney based in New York City – who loves food!
Being raised in the epicenter of culture and cuisine, I’ve had the world of food at my fingertips.
My family history is a story of migration and globalization. My great-grandparents migrated from northern India to Guyana, South America as indentured laborers. My family’s culture is a blend of South Asian tradition with Caribbean influences. My parents emigrated to The Bronx, New York, where I was born and raised.
During my first year of law school, I was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease- a genetic form of macular degeneration. I lost most of my central vision, and I am now legally blind. It has been very challenging, but I learned that I can still do almost everything as anyone else – just a little differently. I rely on my cell phone and other devices to magnify or read text and images.
I graduated from law school in 2014, and have been practicing civil litigation ever since. In 2018 I got married and finally moved out of my parents’ house to a tiny Manhattan apartment.
I figured it might be a good time to learn how to cook. I fell in love with the kitchen, and discovered a new passion.
While I practice law full-time, I enjoy cooking and experimenting with flavors at leisure.
My recipes are inspired by my Indo-Caribbean heritage with a cosmopolitan twist.
My recipes are reasonably simple and accessible – all made in a tiny Upper West Side apartment.
